Denver, Colorado (3/15/1999) --- DIRECTV, the nation's largest satellite television company, recently remodeled an existing building in Culver City, California. It was important that the correct roofing assembly be installed to meet building code and insurance requirements and to protect the millions of dollars of broadcasting equipment to be housed in the building. Initially, The Crosby Group of Littleton, Colorado, as project architects, specified a black roofing system. However, the roofing contractor, Southern California Roofing convinced them otherwise.

According to Bill Bryan, the project manager for Southern California Roofing, "White, reinforced PVC single ply roofing is state-of-the-art and has an excellent track record in the western United States. The parent company of DIRECTV, Hughes Electronics and General Motors, both use PVC roofing systems extensively on their facilities nationwide, so we convinced them it would be the best system for this project as well," he said. Pat Reed, the manager of facilities and operations for DIRECTV, also preferred the white roof.
The reflective UltraGard® PVC roofing membrane is particularly well suited for Southern California. It holds up extremely well despite being exposed to atmospheric pollutants and building movements caused by minor earthquakes.
The 180,000 square foot roofing system consists of a 4-inch layer of isocyanurate foam insulation and UltraGard SR-60 mechanically attached over a metal deck. The roofing assembly had to meet the strict requirements of DIRECTV's insurance company, Factory Mutual. The installation carries a 15-year NDL (no dollar limit) guarantee.
According to everyone involved, including Pat Reed of DIRECTV, the job went very smoothly. The general contractor on the project was W.E. O'Neil Construction Company.
